Passenger Ferry Operations
AIWCL supports operations of an expanding fleet across priority routes using modern steel catamarans, and community ferries (under jibondinga scheme). These services ensure safe, reliable, and accessible transportation for passengers in both urban and rural areas, with night navigation capabilities now enabling connectivity even after dark.
Cargo Movement & Logistics
Assam has nearly 2,000 km of navigable waterways, including 891 km of NW-2 along the Brahmaputra connecting key terminals like Pandu and Dhubri. These handle bulk cargos such as coal, cement, grains, and fertilizers and maintained by IWAI. AIWCL aims to further boost cargo transport through infrastructure upgrades and modern technology integration.
Terminal Development & Management
AIWCL manages development of major river terminals developed under the World Bank-funded Assam Inland Water Transport Project (AIWTP) and other projects under the state and central Government. These terminals are equipped with passenger amenities, EV charging points, cargo handling systems, and smart monitoring infrastructure, contributing to safer and more efficient waterway operations.
Public & Private Participation (PPP)
Through transparent Public-Private Partnership (PPP) frameworks, AIWCL enables private sector involvement in ferry services, terminal management, river cruises, vessel leasing, and allied services. These partnerships ensure a level playing field and performance-based management across projects.
River Tourism and Heritage Routes
From luxury cruises to eco-tourism circuits, AIWCL is promoting experiential tourism on the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. River trails are being developed in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, highlighting Assam’s culture, nature, and biodiversity.
Investment-Driven Service Expansion
To further accelerate sectoral development, AIWCL is inviting private sector participation across key service areas:
Shipbuilding & Repair: We seek investment in world-class vessel manufacturing and ship repair facilities to strengthen Assam’s maritime infrastructure.
Cargo Logistics: There is high potential in expanding cargo transport networks, with a focus on new IWT terminals, last-mile connectivity, and digital tracking systems for seamless cargo movement.
Warehousing & Cold Storage: Establishing modern warehouses and cold chains will support agro-trade and improve the distribution of perishable goods across Assam and the Northeast.
Maintenance Infrastructure: Strengthening servicing and maintenance facilities is vital to ensure year-round, uninterrupted vessel operations.
